A cinematic letter to director Tom Shoval’s friend David Cunio, who was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7th, A Letter to David mines raw behind-the-scenes footage from Shoval’s earlier film, Youth, and present-day images to create a poetic, existential essay about a dire, unimaginable situation.
On the fateful and tragic October 7th, a day now etched in Israeli memory as "Black Shabbat," 33-year-old David Cunio, his wife Sharon, along with their two young daughters, and David's younger brother, 26-year-old Ariel Cunio and his partner Arbel, were forcibly abducted from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists. The night before, they had gathered for a joyful family dinner to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. Now, mere hours later, they find themselves taken hostage to the tunnels in Gaza, terrified and powerless.
Just before reaching the tunnels, David looks back to see his home going up in flames. He had clung to the handle of the safe room door for five harrowing hours, until the terrorists set his house ablaze, with the door handle slowly heating up, burning his hand.
David quickly dialed his twin brother Eitan, who lives in the nearby Kibbutz Mishmar HaNegev. They managed to exchange a few words just before the distant sounds of terrorists raiding their homes simultaneously sounded in their ears. David is rushed with his daughter Yuli to a tractor, his wife Sharon is brought over as well. David and Sharon are acutely aware that their second daughter, Emma, is with Sharon's sister, whom a different group of terrorists took. They hope and pray to reunite with them somewhere in Gaza.
The documentary provides a unique perspective on the events of October 7th, recognizing that the past carries clues to the future. Following the dramatic rules of tragedy, the heroes remain oblivious to what the viewers already know is coming.
